At minimum a resume needs to include information on how to reach you. You should include at the top of your resume, your name, telephone number and a physical address. A P.O. Box may be the way you receive most of your mail, but a physical address gives the employer a greater sense that you belong to the community in which you wish to work. You should also include an email address, and perhaps a website link if it puts the employer in touch with professional information about you.

The resume should also include a quick summary of your education and any degrees or certificates you hold. If you have a college education, listing a high school diploma is unnecessary. You should also not list grade point average (GPA) unless it is higher than a 3.0. If you have not yet finished college or high school, you can include your expected graduation date, and a GPA if it is impressive. Your resume should also include any classes taken that specifically relate to the field in which you are applying.

You should also have a one to three sentence job objective, usually directly following your name and contact information. For example if you are applying for jobs in the publishing industry, a job objective could be something like the following: “Objective: To seek fulfilling employment in the publishing industry in an entry level position.”

Some resumes also include information about your personality type. With more and more companies employing strengths assessment or emotional quotient tests, you might want to list a few bulleted strengths. For example if you are an analytical, assertive, independent, and goal-oriented person, these could be listed. You can test these strengths yourself with books like Now, Discover Your Strengths. Career centers may also offer personality testing.

The resume should also include all relevant job experience. If you are new to the job market, list classes and volunteer efforts. If you have been working for a long time, list relevant job experience only. Normally, you need not go back more than 10 years in a long job history, unless a job you worked before that time gave you skills that can be beneficial to your new employer.

With each job on the resume, you may want to include some bullets of the types of work you did at the job. Only include those things most relevant to a new employer, and don’t spend lots of words on describing your job. If you want to emphasize particular aspects of your job, save this for a cover letter to the employer.

Since the ideal resume does not exceed a page in length, one should not include references unless specifically asked to do so. Instead, state at the bottom of the resume that references can be furnished upon request. Also, in this world of identity theft, do not include your social security number or driver’s license number on a resume. You should also leave out your birthdate, and any information that could potentially be stolen. Once you’ve gained employment, you can furnish these details to your employer. A resume, however, can end up in the hands of many people, particularly if you apply for a large number of jobs.

Well in order to start an IT business you need to know what you want to start. Dou wanna have a Storage facility or rent out server space to people? Do you want to fix computers and build them up for companies? A consultant? It all depends on what you are good at, but beware, nobody will use your business unless you a certified and have a reputable(SP?) reputation in the IT world.

Q&A: I have a list of company names in Word that I want to convert to file folder labels. How can I do this?

Question by Rick: I have a list of company names in Word that I want to convert to file folder labels. How can I do this?
I have a list of 75 company names typed out in Microsoft Word. I’d like to convert this list into file folder labels, specifically formatted for Avery 8366. I know how to select the Avery 8366 and type them manually. Just curious if there’s a way to simply convert the list into the labels. Thanks!
The Mail Merge feature in Word appears to be for mailings. It will not let me convert this list to a list of Folder Labels with Mail Merge. When I go to Step by Step it says “Select Recipients.” There are no recipients.

Do a mail merge using the data in Word.

The data in Word should be in the form of a table. The first row of the table must contain the name of the field. If it is easier for you, you can import the data into Excel.

In Word, go to Mailings tab, Start Mail Merge group and click on the down arrow next to the Start Mail Merge icon and select Step by step mail merge Wizard. This will guide you through the process.

As a final step when doing labels, after you have inserted all the fields in label 1, click on the Update labels icon to transfer all the information in label 1 to all the other labels.

EDIT: Where it says Recipients, navigate to your data document. You really want to do a merge to labels. This is where you will select the Avery 8366 labels you are using. http://www.addictivetips.com/microsoft-office/word-2010-mail-merge/

Is it possible to get a good job in this market with 0 experience?

Question by Fox: Is it possible to get a good job in this market with 0 experience?
I’m hoping to enter the job market very soon after a long stint as a homemaker. I have some customer service and technical editor experience under my belt from a trillion years ago, but that’s about it. I need to somehow manage to find a job to support a family on nothing more than a bachelor’s degree in a useless major [Anthropology] and very little work or technical experience. Is it possible in this market? What areas/occupations should I look into?

You might try some temp jobs. This will put some experience under your belt and also give you the chance to try some things out so that, hopefully, you later won’t be working at a job you hate.

I also suggest you talk to friends and see how they ended up in the jobs they have now.

Is this considered customer service experience?

Question by Catherine C: Is this considered customer service experience?
I work at a business where they host parties. I basically cater to the needs of the party guest and clients. I don’t service food or anything I just do basic clean up if there is a spill and break down after the event is over. I also greet guest and tell them where to go along with doing coat check.

Im trying to get a retail position before I start school this summer and I know I have a better chance of getting that job if I have customer service experience.

I can only answer for how I did it in the US. In the US we have “temporary agencies”, which are companies that find you part-time or short term jobs. Companies that are looking for someone just long enough to develop a small database, or help with a computer refresh project or similar work. It is often for 2-6 weeks then the job ends.

But by taking those kinds of jobs I can show my skills to the companies, and then invite them to contact me personally should they need additional work done. (They can hire me cheaper then they can pay a temporary agency to hire me – and I get all the money)

Over about a three year period I build up enough small companies that need my help part time to be able to make a decent living doing it. Have been doing IT work for over 15 years now.

I got a negative evaluation at my job when I first started. Will this hinder me from promoting?

Question by g: I got a negative evaluation at my job when I first started. Will this hinder me from promoting?
I hated the job (worked in a call center), the commute was horrible, and I had a lot of personal issues going on. However, they transferred me and the work is much better and suited toward more of my personality. My evaluation has been rated above average and the like now. However, if I ever want to promote, will my earlier negative evaluations hinder me from ever working my way up?

Begin deep meditation. You must be able to exhibit calm, logic, and understanding in the face of the irate and totally ridiculous public. Develop a thick skin, so you don’t take any comments or insults personally.

You can’t appear disinterested, though. You must always be focused on determining what the customer is asking for, what would make them satisfied, and what you have the authority to offer.
