In order to finish my degree, should I take out a line of credit or work full time?

Question by Amaranth: In order to finish my degree, should I take out a line of credit or work full time?
If I continue in school full time, I will finish my Bachelor of Social Work degree in 1 year. However, I currently have a student loan debt of $ 43,000. My first option is to take a $ 10,000 line of credit and continue in school full time, finishing in 1 year. My second option is to work full time at a job that earns $ 23/hour, but it will take 2 years to finish my degree. The job I can take is not related to social work, but it is a government job at a call centre. Here in BC, the average income of a starting social worker is about $ 44,000 (for full time work; not sure if this income is for social workers with a BSW and/or MSW). What would you do?

Get the loan but get a part time job so that you can start paying down on it immediately.

You probably can start with a few mops, brooms, a few cleaning supplies, etc and some business carts. You would have to set up a separate checking account and may need a business license and some accounting/tax advice. But this is a cheap start business. Good luck.

Should I take out a line of credit, or take on a full-time job to finish my degree?

Question by Amaranth: Should I take out a line of credit, or take on a full-time job to finish my degree?
If I continue in school full time, I will be finished my Bachelor of Social Work degree in a year. However, I already have a student loan that is over $ 40,000. My first option is to take out an $ 8,000 student line of credit from my bank and finish my degree in a year (plus, for some of the year, I can work at minimum wage, part-time job on the side for about 10 hours/week). My second option is to take a full-time call centre job that pays about $ 25/hour, but I will have to go to school part time only, and it will take me 2 years to finish my degree. What would you do?

If I knew that I would get a full time job with a decent salary in my field immediately upon graduation, I would stay in school full time. If that was uncertain, I would opt for the longer route of working full time and going to school part time.

Oh boy, anything other than sociology or economics. Sorry, there just aren’t a lot of good jobs out there for sociologists or economists.
Accounting definitely. Accounting is the language of business spoken through numbers and reports. Every business has some kind of accounting system going on.

Q&A: What steps should I take to start my own company ?

Question by ventsyv: What steps should I take to start my own company ?
I want to start an IT related company and I would like to know what are different steps that I need to take to register a company ? What about trademark ? What paperwork is involved with keeping a company running ? What about taxes ? How complex will it be to run a company ?

Registering a company is not difficult at all. First check with your state requirements, which is primarily name registration. There are lots of companies that provide these services for you -www.mycorporation.com, but they usually charge a premium. As an IT company, make sure you get your domain name secured, again, lots of companies out there to assist -www.godaddy.com, is my favorite.
Taxes are based on your corporate structure, and vary greatly. Make sure you go to www.irs.gov to research the differences, you can set yourself up as a C-corp (company pays its own taxes) S-Corp (shareholders pay their portion of taxes), LLC (Limited Liability) or Partnership, or you can stay simple by being a sole propreitor. What all this determines is whether you will be filing an 1120 corporate tax return on March 15, or if all your taxes go on your personal tax return. Now if you have employees, payroll taxes will have to be considered. But this comes later.
Running a business to start is not complicated, but make sure you have invested in a good accounting product. For brevity, Quickbooks is a pretty good bookkeeping tool, the training tutorial is pretty easy and the interface is user friendly. Trademarking and patenting can be done but don’t need to be done first.
Most importantly, devise a strong business plan. Although this helps investors, it helps you, the owner more. It places all your thoughts down into concrete black and white. It brings out your strengths and weakness, and determines if now is the right time to jump in. Palo Alto has good software to assist with this.
You may also want to meet with a local SCORE representative to pick their brain.
Good luck
