Question by subarugirl06: If a bag of cat food says the food is made in the USA, are all the ingredients also from the USA?
Or is it one of the things they get away with stating because it is “technically” true? Example: Are ingredients imported from China and then just thrown together in the USA, thus the food is technically made in the USA?

I have an offer to work for Sitel doing technical support rep work for 9.00 an hour full time for the Sony PS3 and PSP. I could certainly use the money but I’ve heard horror stories about what call centers are like to work in. People say that you attendance is tracked down to the minute, that call center management is literally heartless, that you are not allowed to have bathroom breaks other than during your break, cell phones are NOT ALLOWED AT ALL. I’ve just heard so many people compare them to hell itself.
I’ve even heard stories of people who were near deathly ill and management basically gave them a choice between going to the hospital and keeping their job. I haven’t had any of these experiences yet and I know there are different types of call center work such as inbound and outbound. I’ve also heard people in IT and computer repair refer to call center jobs as working in hell.
So, any advice or opinions?

Well, I had a chance to work so far in three call centers. The first one I luckily was not on the queue myself, and did not see anything really horrable going on, but the turnover rate was 100% per year. People apparently considered it a living hell and were leaving as soon as they could. They have restructured the call center into a more comfortable place to work after one year and reduced the turnover.
The second call center I was supposed to be on a queue, but on the very first day was advised by management that I was not supposed to keep my cell on, not supposed to go to the washroom when I needed to and I could not take a day off or a sick leave without letting them know two weeks in advance. Also they were making each call center employee track and account for every minute of their time, which was extremely counterproductive, because it was taking a lot of time. But that was not enough to make me quit. Finally they introduced a new manager, who had an ambition of increasing productivity, but was apparently a former mailroom girl, so she had a bitchy character to bitch all day around that call center employees are 40% not enough productive on average, but she apparently had no knowledge of statistics, and was using completely wrong methods of measuring productivity and comparing it to wrong data. Now that was enough! One day I have sent her an e-mail with explanations what I thought was the problem with the way she evaluated productivity and got fired. I was able though to negotiate with HR a termination without cause.
The third center I worked for had nice management and life was quite bearable, but I could not live on $ 15 an hour they were paying me, so I found another job after one month and quit. I think it is a financial abuse to make someone do call center job for such little pay. This work requires knowledge, customer service skills and it is a very stressful and hard
work. So it needs to pay at least an average, not a minimum wage. I wish one day they outsource it to India, because I rather stay home then do that kind of work for that kind of pay.

what colleagues? do they work there?
it;s a scam if you don;t get a paycheck after your first couple o weeks.
did you fill all all normal new hire paperwork – I-9, W-4, job application, etc? IF not, then they may not be legit or you may get a 1099 instead of a W-2 and you’ll have to pay all your own taxes including the portion of FICA taxes that the employer is supposed to pay – and if they DO NOT give you a paystub showing withholding taxes, etc, then they are violating federal labor laws because a job at a call center would not qualify a 1099 type consulting position – it’s an “employee” position and requires a W-2 and paystubs and taxes being withheld, also – if they treat you like a 1099 person, I guarantee they will not be paying into the unemployment system for you so if you get terminated, you will not be able to collect unemployment benefits

Kingfisher and jet Airways flights to Delhi, Pune and Mumbai on May 30,2011 Total fare paid was 12458 and the bill submitted was 26386. “Your resume will be transmitted to this company and also posted on our subscriber-only resume database. Choose which contact information you would like to appear. For anonymity, you may choose to only display your E-mail address.”
It gives me the option of my full name, email address, phone number, home address and fax number.
I have to check one to share or it won’t let me submit the job application.

Do NOT submit that application! “Subscriber-only” means they are SELLING your personal info. Time to pitch some major “fits” in the proper places!
Print out that web page, and send it with a letter to your state’s Attorney General, Consumer Protection Division, in your state capital. State that you are objecting to a prospective employer trading, selling, or otherwise submitting confidential info from resumes and/or job applications to third parties. Verbally “have their hide” over this!
Write to the state Dept of Labor, or file a complaint, about unfair labor practices. You should not have to agree to the posting of your resume, or to the sale of your resume & personal data to 3rd parties, in order to submit a job application to a prospective employer.
And enclose a copy of your letters to the [state] Attorney General & [state] Dept of Labor with a letter or complaint to the head of Party City. (Do some homework and get the name of the CEO and the address of the company’s headquarters.)
Take them on! You can also send a copy of your letters to the FTC, complaining that you are concerned that this can lead to identity theft, identity fraud, and misuse of personal information.
Hope you are an excellent verbal communicator. This is one time you need to thank your “Grammar Hound” English teachers for being sticklers on spelling, punctuation, grammar, and developing a very “expressive” and extensive vocabulary. No, you cannot swear or use off-color language. Yes, you can, in effect, “tear them a new one,” as they say, with some erudite, yet highly effective, language.
