The rattling of a sewing machine came from my grandmother’s room all day long when I was young. Seeing the excitement in her eyes when she completed her work remains a vivid memory and I can never forget the sound of her sewing machine which still makes my heart leap. My maternal grandmother was a fashion designer and excellent seamstress; therefore she got me interested in the appearance of clothes and fashion design. Fashion always has been a crucial component of my life ever since then, which is why I decided to study Clothing at Kyung University in South Korea.

In my undergraduate days, several meaningful experiences I have had with fashion had led me to realize that this is exactly what I would like to pursue for the rest of my life. These worthwhile experiences include taking helpful major classes, participating in global fashion weeks and doing an internship.

I took two major classes this spring semester which were: Fashion Studio and Modern Fashion Information Analysis. They provided a thorough and comprehensive grounding in the fundamentals of the fashion industry, and the more I learned about the fashion industry and business, the more I wanted to jump into that field outside of the class. From that moment, I started trying to join international fashion programs which would help me gain an overall broader understanding of world fashion industry and broaden my horizons.

During my summer vacation, I took part in the Hong Kong fashion week and the Singapore Fashion Festival which are renowned fashion events in Asia. At the Hong Kong fashion week I was able to get a chance to exhibit clothes that I designed. Preparing for the fashion week I made not only a women’s top inspired by Taekwondo, but also a cost plan containing every expense involved in creating my product with a full sense of responsibility. I went to a large fabric wholesale market day and night for a month to find appropriate fabrics at reasonable prices. I managed to reduce the total cost by $ 25 enabling me to make a profit while still maintaining quality. I set up a display with our team and had individual sales meetings with buyers. After experiencing such a great program, I wanted to see more and more how the real fashion industry operates.

My winter internship at Shinsegae International which is a large fashion retail enterprise and a subsidiary of Samsung was the most significant experience for me. I worked there as an intern in the fashion merchandising department in a brand named Naturalism. During my internship, I learned how to successfully lead a multi-million dollar fashion business, including understanding distribution process, analyzing business, identifying trends and developing presentation skills. To be specific, I made distribution sheets for the exact amount of the products for each store and reported to outsourcing companies. Next I put an order to subcontractors to bring new products to every store we’ve got. A good mathematical ability was required to supply the exact quantity of products on time and minimize our stock losses. I handled things with keenly analytical judgment so that there would not be any trouble later on. Those things were very essential work for the merchandiser and were a definitely rewarding opportunity to learn the ins and outs of how to run a fashion company.

My GPA is not that good, however after my career goal became clear, I realized how low my GPA was and put more effort into my studies to improve my score from my third grade onwards. My strength has not lain in the classroom but in the real world of the fashion business through the global fashion weeks and the successful internship. These various experiences helped me realize exactly what I want and confirm my own career goal to go into fashion merchandising. Accordingly, I decided to apply to the Fashion Institute of Technology to learn more professional and practical skills which cannot be taught in any other colleges and I am absolutely ready to acquire new things with my strong will.

After college, I will be a professional, skillful women’s wear merchandiser who knows exactly what is needed in that field, making sales much more developed with the practical knowledge from FIT. I really want to improve my merchandising career in the global fashion industry, being an active member of the international community.
