Question by NewEnglandMom: What is the average clerical pay in Phoenix?
We are considering relocating to Phoenix and have seen quite a few job postings online. Some seem too good to be true with this economy. I am looking for customer service, admin/office type jobs. I have the experience so I am looking for above entry level. I am seeing postings of $ 14-$ 16/hour for data entry jobs, or $ 15/hour for receptionist in a doctor’s office. Can someone just give me a ball park of the real pay. You talk to some people and they say minimum wage or no more than $ 10/hour.

I had a job search about 10 months ago. I’m an office manager, with a BA in accounting, and about 10 years experience. A lot of the jobs at that time were looking to hire someone for $ 10-$ 12 an hour. While the offers may have been low-ball just to see if they could get someone in, most seemed pretty serious that they were only willing to top out at $ 15 per hour, and that would be if you did not get health insurance with their company. I did not accept any of those offers, and I did eventually manage to find a job in my pay scale. I have no idea what Dr’s or dentist office receptionists make, it’s just not a field I was looking at.

Cost of living here is far less than in many major cities, so you can’t really base your past salary on what you’d expect to make here. A $ 75K a year job in Boston (for example) is only going to pay $ 45K here.
