In Bangalore, a techie has dragged telecom giant Airtel to court because the company had given wrong information to the police and landed the engineer in jail. “I have spent 50 horrible days in jail. You can’t measure the trauma which I went through, my family went through,” says Lakshman Kailash. Twenty-eight-year-old Lakshman Kailash was a successful software engineer with HCL, had everything going for him when two years ago he was rudely awakened by a Pune Police team in Bangalore. Kailash was arrested and thrown in prison for allegedly ‘defaming Shivaji’ in a picture he was supposed to have put up on Orkut. But they had the wrong man. Airtel had botched up, and gave police the wrong IP address. Kailash was not released even after the police claimed to have caught the real culprits about two weeks after his arrest. The service provider was asked to pay a compensation of Rs 2 lakh by the Maharashtra Human Rights Commission. However, the again defaulted on the payment and their top executives have now been summoned by a magistrate court in Bangalore. “Its a small amount for them and I really don’t understand why they are not paying up. They have to follow court orders. They are citizens of India, whether they think they are guilty or not is secondary,” says Lakshman Kailash. When the Human Rights Commission’s rebuke didn’t move the wheels, he filed a second complaint with the National Consumer Disputes Forum seeking Rs 20 crore as compensation.
