The process of business outsourcing has grown in popularity over the past several years as companies look to cut costs and focus on their core competencies. When someone else can do the job better (and for less cost), it often makes sense to outsource certain tasks.

Afterall, businesses make money one of two ways–they either increase their revenue or they cut their costs. Outsourcing is a great way for businesses to cut costs and refocus energies on increasing revenue.

Examples of outsourcing range from business services like printing/photocopying and human resources/payroll outsourcing to manufacturing.

The benefits of outsourcing business services like those mentioned are numerous. Typically, a company that focuses on printing and photocopying is going to get much better volume discounts on materials. A company that makes widgets, but needs to print brochures might outsource this to a printing company because the printer will do a better job and probably cost much less than it would to print in-house.

Human resources, government compliance, payroll and tax filing are all huge headaches for the typical business owner. Companies like Administaff and ADP provide these services to companies for a reasonable price–much less than the business owner would have to pay a human resources department–and have more resources available to get the job done efficiently and effectively.

When it comes to manufacturing, many U.S. companies will outsource manufacturing of their products to places like China, Mexico and other countries where labor is cheaper than it is in the U.S. (or other wealthy nations). It’s often hard to justify paying union wages (or even minimum wage) in the U.S. when someone in India or China might do the job for 10 cents on the dollar.

There are drawbacks when it comes to outsourcing. When certain tasks are outsourced, the company that is outsourcing the tasks may relinquish some control and this could have an end result of poor quality and dissatisfaction. When it comes to manufacturing, for instance, the decision has to be made “Where am I going to get the best finished product for my customers at the lowest cost to me? From my own internal manufacturing facilities and employees or from a facility in Asia?”

When you call companies like your cellular phone company or others who rely heavily on customer service reps (CSR’s) have you noticed that the CSR’s often have hard to understand accents? That may be because your cellular carrier outsourced customer service to a company in India (as an example), where college educated, English speaking employees will happily work for a fraction of what CSR’s might be paid in the U.S.

I know of a handful of people who have switched their cellular carrier (or bank, or satellite radio provider, or credit card company, etc) because they can not understand the accent of the CSR’s.

Outsourcing as a concept is a boon for businesses for all of the benefits derived from it. But it should be done carefully so as not to take one step forward and two back.
