Most phonebook listings are Places that offer services. Which means the jobs they have are customer service.

Example
-restaurants: Need customer service
-Repair places: need customer service
-Sear, K-Mart, Walmart: need customer service

Most times, companies in phonebook will not be private places that need office support like scanning, administrative, etc.

So how do you cold call and have chances finding jobs other than customer service?

By the way, now that we’re in a tough economy, newspapers etc have almost nothing so even employment services have told me that i should do cold calling. that’s why i’m starting to do it

i’m 29 male, never done cold calling before. Yesterday i did, and i just said “hello, are you hiring?” and most places said no. They were places like OfficeMax but if they had jobs , would be most likely customer service

Call any company, not just big ones. Find an industry you like, and start calling. Ask for the HR department’s fax number. Fax over a cover letter, and your resume (or CV). Then call a few days later again and ask for HR to verify if they received your resume, and to ask if they had any positions available.

In this economy a lot of companies have a hiring freeze and can’t hire anyone new. However, they can use temps. Get your self set up with a temp agency and see where they can place you. People still take vacations and sick days, and you can almost always find a temp reception job.
