Q&A: How do I get a job in an office with no previous experience?

Question by Agent S: How do I get a job in an office with no previous experience?
I suffer from severe social anxiety which makes it impossible for me to keep a job if it deals with customer service or even something that just involves answering phones.
I’m good with computers though I have no previous job experience proving it. How do I go about getting a simple clerical type job with no previous experience?

Best answer:

Answer by Miles C
Volunteer work, say with a church

A church has members who know companies, so, ergo, contacts

You have to network

Other ways into a company is such jobs as janitor, because with your foot in the door, you know who hires, what jobs are open, etc

What kind of job can I get with an Associates of Arts Degree Sociology and No Experience?

Question by Silver S: What kind of job can I get with an Associates of Arts Degree Sociology and No Experience?
Just looking for a job that I could get with my Associates Degree while completing my Bachelors and then going to Law School. The only experience I have is warehouse, manufacturing, and a little customer service as a server a while back.

Best answer:

Answer by Sgt Big Red
Well at least with an Associates Degree, you can be in the back barking orders to those in front flipping burgers! instead of cooking them.
Your best bet, continue on for a B.A and find a field you enjoy, that way even if you don’t make a lot, you will at least enjoy your job.

How do I get a waitress job without actual experience?

Question by Lily: How do I get a waitress job without actual experience?
I just lost my job and I am looking for jobs as a waitress. I think it will be a great opportunity for me and even though its hard work I want to work as a server. I have almost two years of customer service experience and I am good with people so is there still a chance someone would like to hire me as a waitress even though I don’t have food service experience? If so what tips would you give me to get into this type of business.

Best answer:

Answer by Lindsey B
With your work experience qualifications you have a very good chance of becoming a server. Also, if they know that you are fully aware of the hard work that lies ahead in this line of work then you have a high advantage over other applicants. Remember to tell the manager every single thing that makes you qualified for the person (energetic, work experience, friendly, customer-oriented, likes to work with people, etc.) and make sure to SMILE and dress PROFESSIONALLY (no jeans, t-shirts or sneakers) when you apply and get an interview.

Afterward before they hire you, you may have to visit your local health department and get your Food Handler’s Card in order to be able to serve food. It can cost up to $ 7.00 for the test to get the card (basically studying a pamphlet of food info and taking a multiple-choice test) and then you’ll be good to go.

Good luck! I hope you snag a waitressing job!

What job is non-retail and non-restaurant and non-people contact with no experience necessary?

Question by Gabriela: What job is non-retail and non-restaurant and non-people contact with no experience necessary?
I’m looking for a job, but not in retail or restaurants and that doesn’t require people contact such as customer service or public service and where you don’t need much experience. Something like a Janitor or a warehouse worker, but I already tried those. So what are some other jobs that fit into that description?

office go-for, file clerk, stock clerk(probably retail a bit)

I say analyst and do a phd later after you have more experience in the field. I have less experience & education than you do though.. but I always liked professors who had real world experience (in the business school). Unless you study something like math. Or do research in finance.

Have you ever been a consumer for the company you worked for and had a bad experience?

Question by ASL*ImL: Have you ever been a consumer for the company you worked for and had a bad experience?
I’ve had a couple less than satisfactory experiences and it has to do more with the customer service end of our job than the actual job as in being courteous and I really hope it was just a bad day for that particular person and not their standard.
Any one have bad experiences with being on the receiving end of whatever your company/job is?

Not sure why you have no answers. I will just follow up and see if I can help.

I notice that in just about every industry, customer service is not up to par. Along with that, management is usually not either and it trickles down. Management is sometimes to harsh on the workers which can cause discouragement. There again, if they do not care and do not implement rules, it is worse. Just this system, sorry to say.

- Miscellaneous clerical/administrative tasks and projects

Answer by Adnan Masood
I think that it all depends on the company in question. Many companies have different job titles for similar positions and visa versa. Some companies will also hire without any experience and others will not.

When I think of a customer service supervisor, I tend to think of the customer service counter at my grocery store. There are always employees there to redeem lottery tickets, bottle returns, cash paychecks, handle money orders, and so forth. With that said, there is always a person wearing a different uniform standing on the sidelines. I tend to think of that person as the supervisor of the customer service department.

It wouldn’t hurt to apply for the job even if you don’t have any experience. Just know that your chances of getting a call for an interview might be less than others who apply.

When filling our your job application or resume, post as much relevant information as you can. This includes volunteer work where you worked with consumers and provided service. Something as simple as being a cashier at a mall store will help. Although you do not have management or supervisor experience, the customer service experience will come in handy.

Good luck!
