LISP Part 2 – Mapping Database Infrastructure and Interworking
Posted by PuneStuff in Pune Videos on February 4th, 2012
Google Tech Talk February 17, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by Dino Farinacci. In Part 1, we discussed how endpoint IDs and routing Locators are used to provide a level of indirection for routing and addressing. This session will describe all the database mapping algorithms we have considered for mapping an EID to a set of Locators. We will take about the technical challenges of each and brainstorm about the business models that develop as a result of each mapping database algorithm. We will then show how LISP can be deployed to interoperate non-LISP site that run IPv4 and/or IPv6 for a seamless integration. Dino Farinacci: Dino originally joined Cisco in spring of 1991 and was one of the first two Cisco Fellows. He has built routers for 27 years. Dino currently works in the Data Center Business Unit at cisco where his focus is on building a next-generation platform and operating system for Enterprise and Data Center environments. This platform is the Nexus 7000 running NX-OS which shipped in April of 2008. His expertise specializes in routing protocols where he has intimate knowledge and implementation experience with IS-IS, EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, IGMP, PIM, and MSDP, as well as IPv6 and MPLS protocols. He is an advocate for modular operating systems. Dino also has been a member of the IETF for 19 years making many contributions over this period of time. Are spiders and robots able to access the links on pages created by database and PHP or ASP?
Posted by PuneStuff in Pune Stuff Questions & Answers on December 14th, 2011
Question by Rockstar: Are spiders and robots able to access the links on pages created by database and PHP or ASP?
We’re working on a new website, separate from the one our website company provides, and we’re planning to generate a lot of dynamic layout. Each page will have a lot of “includes” of several separate files like headers and footers, and in addition, much of the content will be provided via database. I just wondering, since what you’ll see on the screen doesn’t actually exist as a whole, how will the spiders be able to follow the site? Do they simply read the HTML as it is sent by the server side code the same way a browser does? I just want to make sure that I’ve got enough static content to allow the spiders to work easily.

If I am not wrong, just ‘View Source’ your page. That’s what the spider will read.

Q&A: How can I best ingest xml data and audio files into a database which can output various formats of data?
Posted by PuneStuff in Pune Stuff Questions & Answers on December 14th, 2011
Question by Huxton_Billbob: How can I best ingest xml data and audio files into a database which can output various formats of data?
I run the content department at an independent media company. We have to keep track of tens of thousands of audio files, as well as image files and metadata files in various formats that are associated with them. We also have to output files and data in even more different formats. We have been manually organising the system using excel and DOS batches, but it is getting to the stage where we need it to be more automated.
Is it possible to ingest XML/XLS data and other files all at once and add them to a database which manages data AND files? Or is this wishful thinking?
I don’t expect many people to understand what the hell I’m talking about… if you do though, please help!

Most RDBMS systems provide a BLOB (binary large object) data type that can be used to store data files such as audio files. You can also store XML files in an associated table/column, but it would probably be best to transform the XML and import the data into the schema rather than simply store the XML so that the audio files are searchable. I’m not aware of any off-the-shelf applications to do specifically what you’re looking for, so you might need to write an application to perform the imports/exports to your database.

Will the court run my proof of liability insurance through a database to verify or will they just look at it?
Posted by PuneStuff in Pune Stuff Questions & Answers on December 14th, 2011
Question by Mike G: Will the court run my proof of liability insurance through a database to verify or will they just look at it?
I was pulled over in the central-most state for a minor traffic citation, and my proof of liability insurance was expired. The truth is, even though I intend to always have insurance, this Insurance company never notified me that mine was expiring or asked me to renew it, and so I never thought of it, and so I don’t think I had any liability insurance at that time. The officer told me if I take valid proof of insurance to the court, the “no proof of liability insurance” citation can be waived. I know I can easily modify the year on my card and print it off, since it was originally given to me as a computer file. So, my question is, will the court just look at the proof I give them to see that it’s valid and current, or will it be run through a database to verify?
Thanks all for the 7 replies so far. I have some responses & follow-up questions.
As for me being shady…admittedly my idea of changing a couple digits on the document is shady. However, IF I didn’t get busted, the end result is just that I avoid getting stuck with a citation & fee. It’s not like someone else is being harmed by my actions, which I would definitely be against–because I’m not shady in that way.
Anyway, “keri.kerri” & “dog meat sandwich” mentioned that I should just have current insurance when I go to the court and then I’ll be fine. But I thought that what matters, like “insuranceman” (who seems to be an expert) said, is whether I had current insurance when the citation was given, regardless of whether or not I do now. Isn’t that how it works? I haven’t gotten the new insurance yet, though I definitely need to. However, WILL THAT HAVE ANY IMPACT AS FAR AS THIS PENDING CITATION IS CONCERNED?
Maybe the idea is that showing that I have current insurance now will make them much more likely to cut me some slack.
Also is it really just a minor fine for driving without liability insurance? I thought it might be a fairly hefty penalty. Though I’m sure nothing like the penalties for forgery and perjury. WHAT SORT OF PENALTY (potential fine amount and anything else) WOULD I BE LOOKING AT FOR DRIVING WITHOUT LIABILITY INSURANCE?

If you just purchase insurance, that is what the court will be looking for – CURRENT valid proof of insurance. Don’t add forgery to your troubles. Get insurance.

How To Make Money When You Own A Huge Database Of Information On The Web?
Posted by PuneStuff in Pune Stuff Questions & Answers on December 14th, 2011
Question by PhaiZe: How To Make Money When You Own A Huge Database Of Information On The Web?
Now lets say you a have this huge database of information for your market niche which aren’t available on the internet, yet. So what will be the money generator here? Baring in mind that you’re an actual company that went through a lot of work to gather this information.
I surfed the web for answers but mostly is the basic “open a website and then take it from there, (i.e. Google Adsense, Pay Per Click, etc). What i’m looking for is something like, ‘get sponsorship for articles you write up about your niche’. I mean more “Real-Life Marketing then” than “Internet Marketing”.
Is there a book out there that could help out.
Thanx! = )

What program can I use to create a searchable database for my website?
Posted by PuneStuff in Pune Stuff Questions & Answers on December 13th, 2011
Question by Austin: What program can I use to create a searchable database for my website?
I work for a company that sell auto parts, and we’re looking into creating a website for selling out products. I have looked around at many, many different websites that sell auto parts, and determined that I really don’t love the way most of them work. So while we’re still considering hiring someone to create the structure of the site for us, I’m now considering the possibility that I might have to do a lot of the work myself I am going to get it how I want it.
The main issue we have is that we need to be able to have a database of all of our parts that can be searched on the website. A search bar would be good, but more than that we need to have it so that customers can select Make > Model > Year > Engine type, etc., and have the site tell them what part or parts they need. They could then order the part from there.
Thing is, I’m a design guy, not a database guy. I don’t know how that kind of thing works. I assume there’s some software out there that would make it easier…something that would let me input the make, model, year, etc. of each part so the look-up feature could reference that. But I know nothing about it. I can build a website out of a blank notebook file, but this kinda thing is beyond me.
Any answers would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

Databases these days are usually accessed using the SQL querying language.
SELECT Part FROM Parts WHERE Price < 50, that sort of thing -- I don't really know SQL.
But yeah if you can set up an SQL compliant database then designing system that access it should be straightforward.

Q&A: I need help creating my MySQL Database for music?
Posted by PuneStuff in Pune Stuff Questions & Answers on December 13th, 2011
Question by TheWhiteRâbbit: I need help creating my MySQL Database for music?
I’m creating a database for music in MySQL , I have 2 tables so far.
{* = primary key}
One table is Artist, which consists of the (Artist Name*, Num of Albums)
My second table is Albums which has (Album Name*, Num of Tracks, Artist Name, Genre, Record Company, Year Released)
I want to create another table which has the tracks for the Albums individually, however it seems I’m going to have a lot of redundant data, which I want least as possible. I want to know if my structure could use some tuning or if I need to restructure it from scratch.
Best answer:
Answer by Toad
Peronally I would do something like this:
Artist: Artist_PK, Arist_Name, … any personal data you want
You don’t need Number of Albums since this can be computed with a simple query.
Album: Album_PK, Artist_FK, Album_Genre, Album_Record, etc.
Where Artist_FK is a foreign key reference to the the Artist table.
Tracks: Tracks_PK, Album_FK, Track1, Track2, etc.
Again, Album_FK is a foreign key reference to the album.
This way all tables are links with foreign keys and you limit redundant data.

Replace existing data & move recordset to next in database table?
Posted by PuneStuff in Pune Stuff Questions & Answers on December 12th, 2011
Question by Pervez: Replace existing data & move recordset to next in database table?
Dear Sir
I have designed a program named as “Inventory Control System”. I have used Access 2002 for database and VB 6.0 for front end. There are two database tables named as tblpurchase & tblsupply. tblpurchase is being used for storing purchase detail and tblsupply for different systems supplied to my users. My main difficulty is, for example, I have purchased a PC for a user and supplied to him after 5 days.
But that system might be used by different users in different times. So, accordingly I have to update my record as well. For example, user X whose ID-1 using PC-1. After 1 year later management decides to give that PC i.e. PC-1 to user Y whose ID-2. At this point user X is not using PC-1 as that PC has gone to user Y. This situation happens in my company frequently.
I have written below code, but not working as per my expectation. In my code, first of all I have searched user X’s detail based on invoice#(for example Novia-001) from tblpurchase & have placed data on supply form in VB 6.0, (please note, user X’s detail is being kept in tblpurchase & now data is displaying in supply form of VB 6.0). After fetching data of user X in supply form, I expected that below code will superimpose on user X’s record and there will be no record of user X in tblsupply because user X is not using PC-1, Invoice# Novia-001. It is now being used by user Y. But, after saving record of user Y, the pointer is placed on first row of tblsupply. It doesn’t move to next row in the table.
I’m confused, please help.
Regards
Pervez

Sorry but I think you’ve not thought out your data structure very well. What you have is a ‘product’ and a ‘person’, there are your two main tables, you then have a link table that shows which product is in use by which person (and possibly start and end dates if you need a history).
If there is a change of ownership all you have to do is change the link table. You shouldn’t be updating the product or person details at all as they are unchanged at this time.
This structure simplifies the whole transfer of inventory.
However if you really have to use this structure send me the code (zipped up) and I can have a look for you.

Q&A: How do I apporach becoming an Oracle Database administrator?

Question by Iain K: How do I apporach becoming an Oracle Database administrator?
Hi.
I graduated from Glasgow Uni 3 years ago in June, I graduated as a BSc in Applied mathematics.
Since then I joined a graduate scheme (medium sized organisation), recently I have moved to the IT side of the company, more especially an Oracle implementation. After speaking to the Oracle Project Manager, he commented that there is huge scope and opportunity for Oracle database administrators.
Whilst I consider myself to have some knowledge with Microsoft Access, that is as far as my experience stretches. I really fancy the opportunity to challenge myself by training up as a database administrator. I don’t even know where to start? Can anyone with similar experience recommend where to start, what to learn? Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Answer by The Unit
Try to take some courses from Oracle near your location and also look for a job as Database Administrator and consider that you should get the opportunity to learn so try to learn every day and also always read and research about Oracle if this is what you want to do.
