hello!
I’d like to start a website that’s similar to ebay but without the payment processing features. it’s for local use, for a certain industry. Though it’s small scale, it’s completely accessible by the public so I’m worried about security– esp about someone vandalizing it for kicks and “steal” user information (!!). I’ve checked out outsourcing the software/program, but I guess i’d rather have the programmer physically accessible to me as we work on this, so I’d like to hire a developer.
My question is:
1. what language should be used? most have suggest php and mysql… but i’ve been reading up on https– I’m not so technically inclined, but I assume this is different?
2. is there a service that, once the website is up, can check it out for security vulnerabilities?
Any other insight would be most welcome!

Btw, are these vulnerabilities more on the server side (passwords especially) rather than what language the website was created on?
One feature would be that they can upload images and access/change their account content. Is it possible for them to use this to inject something malicious, like upload a virus?

The choice of language isn’t as important as the competence of the developer, I would recommend PHP MySQL because those are open-source free technologies that have very good performance and have a nice stockpile of functions that could help the development.
Your developer I think should have some experience in PHP and in security, some Apache and Linux experience could also go a long way in protecting your server.
There are some testing services but as a webmaster I still prefer to ask some other programmer to attempt to hack my website manually and let me know about the holes I have, it’s usually simple things that make security holes so it helps to have someone checking those up.
Just to note:
https is not a language but a secure transfer protocol, you won’t be needing that since there is no bank transactions on your site.
Apache is the web server that runs PHP preferably on a Linux platform for higher performance and less security holes.
Edited after you added details:
- Passwords and encryption can be made with all languages so again it’s up to the developer.
- File upload can be limited to specific file types and the destination folder on your server shouldn’t have execution access anyway so whatever they upload won’t be able to run but for that specific detail I would highly recommend that you choose a Linux/Unix server for the higher security in access levels, therefore my recommendations would also be Apache web server and PHP MySQL because that combination works like a charm on Linux/Unix servers.

I’d maintain that Quickbooks is the best. But there’s also Peachtree and a newish program called MYOB (Mind Your Own Business) that seems to be growing in popularity.

If you do not have any experience in running a business buy the dummies book for it. I can already assume you know a lot about software. I know a little bit about software. One thing I know is that it takes a lot of legal work to run any business. You have to be able to sustain yourself for 6 months if you business made 0 income. this is a protection barrier. many businesses fail because they don’t have this protection barrier. I think you need to talk to someone in your credit union (if not in one get in one). You need to consult a Professional Business manager. I am an economist, Professional trader, and webmaster.

I have a home business for small companies that benefit from outsourcing administrative tasks rather than hiring an employee. Currently, I use Excel spreadsheets that I have created and MS Money for tracking financials and I am looking at some new software to help me manage things better, give my clients better monthly reports, and begin to help me add payroll to my services.
Does anyone know much about the AME Accounting package? I am thinking about purchasing it but thought I would get more insight from other Yahoo users. I am not an Accountant, but a good bookkeeper and thought that this would be a good program for me to use for the small companies I work with. Tell me what you think or give me suggestions on other programs……But not Quickbooks….hate that one.

Hi! I think you can check out the Chronos eStockCard Inventory Software. It’s a very easy to use inventory system with many powerful features.
They have a Free Edition that you can download to try, it’s free for life but it comes with some limitations on the features.
