Question by winssqueeky: How can I become a virtual assistant? Where can I look for jobs?
I’ve had about 7 years experience in office work doing everything from data entry to Microsoft office to Excel to phones to mailing to customer service to scheduling appointments. I am very interested in working from home. I think that’s pretty cool. I don’t want to be scammed either.
Where can I find a reputable site to post my resume to and look for jobs there?

You need to be searching for Virtual Assistant associations or networks. These are professional association groups for the industry where you will learn about developing as a VA, learn how to run a business, how to get clients and in fact, some of the network sites even help you get clients.
They also have discussion forums, facilities for training, and adding more resources to your business, the ability to sub-contract to or for other VAs and so on.
These are reputable associations and not scams and built to help grow the industry. Some of them also host Virtual Assistant conferences and there is one major online conference each year in May also.

How can I become better at my help desk job?
Posted by PuneStuff in Pune Stuff Questions & Answers on April 25th, 2013
Question by James S: How can I become better at my help desk job?
I was hired by a college to assist students and faculty with managing their online courses. We’re using Blackboard for the software. This is the first time I have worked in a call center/help desk environment and I am interested in tips that I can use to help make my work more efficient. Specifically I would like to know the best ways to get through more calls during my shift because I worry that I am not fast enough.
During the first week I sat at a pc and answered phone calls from students who forgot their passwords. I was able to log in to their online education student account and change their passwords. Other times I had to check with Admissions to see if they were enrolled in online courses.
During each call i would write down the name and student ID with a quick note of the issue. Then after the call I would submit a ticket that was completed by me or escalated to technical support. Should I work on all tickets near the end of my shift or should I make a ticket immediately after each call?
Finally, my supervisors told me that I would have additional responsibilities but they have been pretty vague because right now they want me to focus on just calls. What are typical help desk duties beyond answering calls or chat questions from customers?
Thanks for the feedback

This is pretty much the extent of this job. The “additional responsibilities” mentioned by your supervisors might be something like joining a change management committee or training new hires or documenting procedures once in a while, but unless you get a promotion, it will not mean substantively different day-to-day job duties.
Regarding speed, that is just something that comes with time. It takes most people about 6 months to ramp up to full capacity. Don’t wait until the end of the day to write up your tickets because by then you will have forgotten many of the details.
The only other thing you might do is, if you haven’t already, shadow the most proficient people in your department every so often to see how they do their jobs. Spend a couple of hours each week sitting with someone more proficient than you to observe how they do it.

What course should i take to become a legal secretary?
Posted by PuneStuff in Pune Stuff Questions & Answers on January 6th, 2013
Question by Janelle Marie S: What course should i take to become a legal secretary?
I am 18 years of age, and is planning on changing my career…I can’t seem to grasp the idea of becoming a doctor. It’s not something I’m good at. Rather, I can see myself as someone working in a company or an office either as a call center agent or a legal secretary. This job can be very challenging but it is something that I think I will be able to enjoy. So, I would like to know what degree/s should I take to become one. Thank you!
Best answer:
Answer by Prorkycake
Many legal secretaries actually have no formal training or education as it is usually an entry level position. Avoid the “technical/vocational” certificate programs. They are not worth the money you invest.
I would suggest attending an ABA approved paralegal program. If you are interested in becoming a legal secretary, the legal curriculum will help you. While most legal secretaries have different duties than a paralegal, often many attorneys use their legal secretary as a paralegal. Also, browse your community college catalogs. I know the college I attended had an “office management” degree that prepared you for becoming an office administrator. This will help you immensely. Many times, the legal secretary is the person responsible for running the office. You want a degree that will prepare you for that.
Stay away from certificate programs and find an associate’s degree program with classes that will apply to running an office.

What do I need to do to become A successful Graphic Designer?

Question by NuW JER5EY J: What do I need to do to become A successful Graphic Designer?
I am currently running a small business company called “EKLIPz KREATIONz” in which handles most graphic art designs for hip-hop and urban orientated clients. But i can’t say business is booming.(b-cuz it not)i am takin graphic art classes in school and im learning quite a bit, but i dont think im learning what it takes to really get out there and make money. What id like to know is, Is there a place where i can learn new stuff(financial and business wise) or is there a company i can join and work for a team as an internship or apprentiseship in which i can get the knowledge to do my own thing.
the website for the company is: http://eklipzmedia.tripod.com

Answer by jedimorgana
Short & Sweet:
1. Get a real website that doesn’t have ads or pop-ups (tripod is terrible with those). www.godaddy.com offers domain name registration and yearly hosting for peanuts, and they’re pretty good to boot, I hear.
2. Your website isn’t very professional. My personal opinion is that using internet speak isn’t really mature, and therefore you will not necessarily seem like a guy who gets his stuff done, right and on-time. Remember, advertising execs use graphic artists, too, and they are corporate. Unfortunately, the corporate world is pretty square, and don’t want to waste time struggling to figure out what you’re trying to say. Also, people want someone who comes across as 100% in charge and professional. I’m not getting that from your current site. Also, many of your sample pictures came up as brokent links. You can’t afford broken links.
3. Go to your local tech college for seminars. Also, contact your state agencies for Small Business services. Where I live, there is a mentorship program where people make great contacts and get advice from people that have been through it. You can also get small business loans, as well.
4. Diversify your art. The only way to be really successful is to practice. I know that currently you specialize in urban/hip hop, but to get the most business you need to be available to other venues. You should know all different types of software, and really work to do other things besides your current niche and have examples. Your artwork should speak for you and show how good you really are. Pigeonholing yourself isn’t going to help you compete against a dozen others who are really good. Unfortunately, this is a very high competition area right now. I know quite a few great graphic artists who can’t get jobs for anything. Society is very fickle, and you never know: Abercrombie & Fitch kids who listen to country music could take over, and suddenly your business would totally dry up. Your best avenue to survive is to have lots of different experience and different styles.
3. Make t-shirts and put them up for sale online. www.cafepress.com is one that I think I’ve seen used. Put a variety of stuff out there, and see what people like. It’s free marketing!
Good luck!

euronews right on – When holidays become horror days
Posted by PuneStuff in Pune Videos on December 7th, 2012
www.euronews.com Millions of Europeans are making plans for their dream holidays, forking out large amounts of money in search of the perfect break. But what happens when those promises of paradise come to nothing? And things are far from what you expected or paid for? Sweden is one of the top countries when it comes to people booking package holidays. And it is there that 13 families recently won a case against a major travel company after a vacation to Egypt last summer turned sour. One of the complainants, Lena Samuelsson, told euronews how they booked a five-star hotel with a water park. But the difference between the dream and the reality was a shock, with the complex still under construction. A nearby hotel was offered, but the families say the standards were low: over-crowded, often no water and complaints of rats and bugs. Euronews reporter Seamus Kearney asked Lena: “Could you believe they were booking people into this hotel? Taking money from people and booking them in?” “No, it’s horrible,” replied Lena. “Disgusting.” “I mean you must have been really angry when you saw that?” “Yes, and I can really feel the feeling again when I see the pictures,” she said. The travel firm based in Sweden was forced to pay back 75 percent of what the families were charged. Lena, who lives in Stockholm, said: “When you look in the brochure everything looked so nice. This (our hotel) was looking so nice. But this wasn’t a real picture, it was a Photoshop picture. But you can …
Eyes become red and swells when I wear specs?

Question by jeeva: Eyes become red and swells when I wear specs?
I’m 25 years old male, wearing spectacles for last 10 years for short sight (both eyes have minus 3.25 dpt. But before 8 months, my right eye started paining slightly and became red.My right cheek and area below right eye also started swelling. I thought it might be because of change in eye power hence bought new specs prescribed by a reputed eye care centre. But again i had the same problem so I stopped wearing specs totally. As I did my eyes became normal and swelling was gone in a week. Three weeks ago I ordered contact lens again from another reputed optical shop (I did eye(power) check at the optical shop) and got delivered day before yesterday. When I started using it I had the same problem i.e eyes becoming reddish, pain and swelling. I went to that reputed eye care centre yesterday where doctor told me that my eye nerves are ok but as I insisted further that I have some other problem in my eye, doctor asked me come tomorrow for another test. I could see clearly when I wear specs or Contact lens and I’m working in a night shift BPO for last three years.I have no problem with my left eye. Friends kindly help me out if you know the solution or direction. …Thank you.

1.Reduce swelling directly. Eye puffiness is a type of fluid build-up (edema) in the tissues around your eyes, called the orbits. Therefore, the steps taken to reduce puffiness are similar to those taken to reduce any kind of swelling. The following are “quick fixes” to temporarily encourage fluid to drain away from under your eyes.
* Use strawberry jam. Strawberries were considered to be the fountain of youth in ancient Chinese medicine. Strawberry purée mixed with sterile water may also be used as a monthly enema. This helps with fluid retention as well as increasing colon health.
*Use cold, refrigerated used tea bags. Like the cucumber slices, the coolness reduces circulation, but the tea actually has a slightly astringent (tissue-shrinking) effect as well.
*For a less messy alternative, try putting 2 metal tablespoons in the fridge and use them daily by placing the backs against your eyes.
*Strange as it sounds, Vaseline cream, which is meant to reduce swelling, may work well. Be careful not to get it in your eyes. This only works if you live in Canada, as Vaseline creams in the U.S. are no longer made with the active ingredient that reduces swelling.
2. Rinse your face in cool water and pat dry.
3. Get enough sleep. If you have puffy eyes all day, it could be that you’re simply not getting enough sleep, or the quality of the sleep you are getting is poor. Puffiness under the eyes is a common symptom of sleep deprivation.
4. Elevate your head when you sleep. It’s not unusual to have puffy eyes upon waking. A possible explanation for this may be that when you are laying down for several hours in a horizontal position and then stand up, the fluid that was resting under your eyes is suddenly being pulled down by gravity.[1] This swelling, however, should subside shortly. To reduce it, you can try elevating your head while sleeping so that the fluid is not as drastically drawn down when you get up.
5. Cure puffy eyes from the inside out. Puffiness is a manifestation of excess fluid retention. By addressing your body’s tendency to tuck fluid away, you may be able to indirectly reduce swelling around your eyes.
* Reduce your salt intake. A high intake of sodium may increase your fluid retention, in which case reducing the salt in your diet may produce good results (not only for your eyes, but also for your health in general).
* Snack on bananas and raisins, both of which alleviate fluid retention.[2]
* Consume cabbage or cranberry juice. Both are diuretics, which will help you “evacuate” some excess fluid.[2] Don’t turn to caffeine as your diuretic of choice, as it can interfere with sleep and bring back the puffiness.
* Exercise to improve circulation, which will help your body move fluid through your body, rather than letting it accumulate.
6. Determine if you have any of the conditions associated with puffy eyes. Sometimes the swelling is a side effect of another condition, which is temporary, or must be treated individually.
* Pregnancy – commonly associated with fluid retention
* Hormonal variation in the menstrual cycle – commonly associated with fluid retention
* Dermatitis – sensitive skin is more likely to swell in response to irritants
* Allergies – can cause leaks in the subcutaneous capillary beds around the eyes[3]
* Mononucleosis – puffy eyes may be an early symptom of infection
* Medication – puffiness or water retention could be a side effect
7. Accept yourself. If you’ve checked with your doctor, then your puffy eyes are probably only a cosmetic issue. It happens with age, and sometimes it just happens. Learn to draw attention to other features that haven’t aged, such as the color of your eyes, the curl in your hair, or your attitude towards life.
