Are rental companies entitled to obtain your social security number for renting a piece of appliance?

Question by new mom: Are rental companies entitled to obtain your social security number for renting a piece of appliance?
I am renting a freezer from the company called Rent-A-Center, but I did not expect that they asked me for my social security number when filling out an application over the phone. I did give it, but started to worry right after. I do feel vulnerable at this age of identity theft and I had been cautious not to give out social security number. Are rental companies entitled to have my social security number? Thanks for any comment.

They need it because they are essentially issuing you credit. First off, they are going to pull your credit report to see if you have a history of stiffing people. Second, they will need your social security number to track you down in case you stiff THEM. You can ALWAYS refuse to give them your number, but they have every right to refuse your application just as quickly. Really, the choice is yours!
