yes, I worked on the tills in Boots during the christmas period, that was my first mistake because so many people are stressed during this time
anyway Boots had an offer on clinique make up I think it was, if you spent over a certain amount of money then you got this free clinique make up bag. Anyway so some guy comes to the till that spent the correct money for the offer but he was like I can’t find the bag….so I went to search for it but it wasn’t of the shelves. So then I was like ok I’ll go check in the backroom for you, which takes forever might I add, so I’m leaving all my customers to go help this guy. Unfortunately we had run out due to the store being so busy, the offer is subject to availability anyway….so I told him this and he just started having a huge go at me as if it was my fault. In the end I just go well I’m sorry there’s nothing I can do about it, if you want to make a complaint then feel free.

Ahh the beauty of working customer service. I worked customer service jobs before. Over the phone, if I was dealing with a customer who constantly cussed and blamed me for their faults, I was taught to hang up on them or put them on hold for the longest. I love putting rude customers on hold, that way it gives them a chance to calm down and take a chill pill and it gives me a chance to relax and then when I’m ready, I would resume the call. If they behave like that towards me again, I would once again put them on hold.

Many a time the reponse where I worked was “you can take your money elsewhere.”
We reserved the right to refuse service and they could go complain to my boss if they wanted to.
It didn’t do any good.
She always encouraged us to tell them to leave if they started causing trouble and to go so far as to shut down the whole system if it escalated to a situation like you experienced.
If we told them that we wouldn’t be servicing them and they loitered, we pretty much ignored them and thought it was really funny and kept on working. If all of the above wasn’t enough we go to the heads of the chains and to the security to take it from there.
I really believe that there needs to be a mutual respect for the employees and the customers. Being rude towards the employee isn’t justified unless something went significantly wrong on their part, and it’s also being rude towards every other customer that’s there. The customer is not always right. Even though they can make complaints about this and that that should be attended to doesn’t mean they get to decide how things work.
It’s lame but you’re probably going to be in that situation again. I suggest asking your employer how to handle it. Doing what we did by automatically sending them away and trying to stop the situation before it really started isn’t necessarily how every other establishment operates.
Best of luck :]

I worked in retail until I was eight months pregnant… and I can honestly tell you it wasn’t until my last day at work that I actually experienced anything like that…..
There I was with a BIG FAT BELLY .. and I had this little pi$ $ -ant of a man yelling at me for something he had done wrong.. I just let him yell away .. BUT my boss( BLESS HER HEART) walked over to us and placed her arm across my shoulder and turned me away from the fool… she then turned to him and said:
“did THAT make you feel good.. Can you not see that that woman is very pregnant? and you’re yelling at her because you did something silly ? Do you want her to have a stroke from high blood pressure?”
and she went on and on at him until he slunk away from the shop….

I work in a curtain department and this customer screamed at me because his daughter changed her mind about the colour she picked out and said I shouldn’t have have sold them to her in the first place.
The best though was in a video shop when a customer wanted his money back because I should have known he wouldn’t like the movie he picked out.

Try not to take it personally or let it affect your behavior.

Of course… and that’s when I’d call the manager and let them deal with the irate customer. I am not paid for that… I am paid to serve customers. At that point, the person stops being a customer and becomes an ‘issue’.. and that’s what your manager is there for…

oh yes. i used to work in a call center. if people yelled at me i told them not to yell or swear at me. if it went on too long i told them that i did not deserve to be treated that way i would terminate the call.

I”ve worked retail for 18 years and I”ve seen quite a bit of bad manners from customers.
The worst thing I encountered was a man who wanted to return 12 candles in jars, without the receipt, refused to give his ID, and wanted a cash refund.. He had supposedly left his ID in the car and it was raining too heavily for him to go get it. He screamed and yelled at me for 20 minutes. He took down our first and last names and said he’d complain to the district manager. Since he was being soo unreasonable, I gladly gave him the dist. mgr’s name and phone number.
BTW, he never contacted our district office.
