I am going to India for the first time (and on my own) next week. Is there anything you think I should know?

I am going to Mumbai (2 days) and Pune (18 days)

Be careful for hygiene, especially in what you put into your mouth – - it is not unreasonable to bring your own spoon along.. drink only good bottled water – - be careful about what and where you eat.. ok ?

As an Indian and former resident of Mumbai, I can tell you that if you really want to know the people and culture, get involved with public transport, street restaurant, and local cinema halls. For safety measures, keep your eyes wide open in Mumbai Train. Pune is big Education hub of west India, so try to get things according to that.

*Remember to keep a keen eye on your belongings when you travel. Especially your wallet/purse.
*Avoid eating at open-air roadside eateries. Most of them are unhygienic.
*Always bargain if you’re buying stuff from the cheap places. You’ll find the same item for half-the-price on the next lane. If the seller refuses to lower, walk away & he’ll probably beg you to come back.
*Get precise directions if you set out on journeys by yourself unless you know Hindi.
*Get sun-screen lotion & mosquito repellent.
