How can i stop judging people based on others standards?

Question by abood_nt: How can i stop judging people based on others standards?
hey everyone,

Last month i started my new job at a software company. Since the first day, some employees started to about this guy called Jim and they were telling me some horrible things that he have done in the past years.

At the beginning i was just listening and not paying attention to what they are saying but lately i felt that i started to hate this guy even though i haven’t hold a single conversation with him.

What is the scientific term for what happened to my judgment to jim? how can i stop that from happeningng again with other people?

You just jumped on a band wagon, it happens.

Always put yourself in that persons shoes, and the people around him. Tell yourself that what your hearing is the worst of that person, and is probably exaggerated.

The scientific term for this is: Being a sheep.

Easy, you just have to give people a chance, you can’t judge someone based on what other people say, how would you feel if everyone said Jim was a great guy? You would think he’s a great guy without even talking to him. The only way to know someone for who they really are is to make contact.

i really don’t know the scientific term for that…. but i can surely help you stop from doing that..

listen, first of all, don’t judge a book by it’s cover…. i’ve recently heard a new theory that people are too materialistic… they just believe everything that they see/hear rather than seeing what is “within”, what is “actually there” .. you know, not observing things as they really are… (it was something like that)

second of all, ya, many people make that mistake… i think the only way to solve is to actually get involved as a first or second person..as in, go and talk to this jim guy.. get to know him (this is difficult) and THEN form your opinion….. it may be that what you’ve heard is exaggerated or even untrue… sh** like that happens to a LOT of people…. i was once a victim of a rumor saying i performed magic and used it against people who came on my way…in seventh grade….!!!??? fortunately i had a few good people around me who actually came up to me and talked about it and all i could say was WTF… see, there are people who are completely unaware of what is told about them, that people call them that…since then i was believed to have magic powers but in reality, i DON’T have magic powers…. so maybe it’s the same case with this jim guy..

if you’ve watched this movie called “Home Alone” (the first part), you can relate to it too,… the kids there think that the old man who lives across the street is a murderer coz that’s what people have been saying all along… but when kevin (one of the kids) actually goes and confronts the old man, he finds out that he is just a gentle giant ….

so, good luck with this jim guy…go and see the truth for yourself…it’s there for you to figure it out, not written or spoken by somebody else..

I don’t know what you’d call it, but I do know that talking to Jim and getting to know him for yourself will either prove you right, or prove you wrong. Either way, it will be based off of your own impression, so I doubt they’d be able to change that
