What are some jobs that are “on-call”?

Question by Alex: What are some jobs that are “on-call”?
I’m a college student currently working as a banquet server at a hotel. Since it’s on-call it’s pretty flexible, but I’ve been working there for a year now and I think it’s time to do something else. Does anybody know of any other on-call jobs for college students? I’ve been doing some research and it seems that call centers are pretty good for college students in that they offer tuition reimbursement. Any other suggestions would be appreciated, thank you in advance.

On-call as in they call you to come in and work? That’s not that flexible.
All call centers that I know of want you to sign up for certain shifts. That would be considered more per diem since you have to work X amount of hours on the shifts they have open. Call centers actually suck, to be honest. The only person that liked their job was someone who worked at a sex call center. She loved it and was paid quite a bit. I worked in a regular call center and hated it.
The usual ones like retail or fast food are pretty good. Sometimes you can find something within your major or look and see if they have any positions like assistants at your college. Student patrol at universities are pretty good and I’ve never heard of anyone getting harassed. Plus you have radios and they check in on you.

Question by Tina C: How can I find my dream job? I have a hard time finding job because I have worked many temp jobs in my life.?
I have worked temp jobs from the year 2000 to currently. And I am having a very hard time finding something I really like which is office work. Temp agency will not find me work where I can use my computer skills, they always put me in the customer service jobs. And permanent employers act like they dont want to hire me because of no stable work history. What can I do? I’ve tried everthing. From using famous coverletter and making my resume look professional. The Business School I went to helped me with the coverletters and resume set up. Now what can I do to find my Ideal job in life? I need some good advice on what to do next.

Keep trying. Really, that is the only advice I can offer you. I had the same problem, but mine was more because I bounced around from job to job due to being unhappy with them. Now, I am a office manager of a small company. I’ve been here a year, and I absolutely love it. I can come to work how I want, I’m allowed to be myself, and it’s just a great place to work.

what reason could i tell my supervisor about my resignation?
Posted by PuneStuff in Pune Stuff Questions & Answers on May 12th, 2012
Question by bj: what reason could i tell my supervisor about my resignation?
I got accepted for a job with a good career path in a multi-national company near my family. I am currently working far from them and the work that I do right now is very easy that it has actually been quite redundant but the bad thing is that there is no assurance for what is so called ” job security”. My supervisor has been very kind to me however, I really feel I need an acceptable reason for her not to feel bad about my resignation. Past employees of the company never tells this supervisor about the actual reason like ” career growth” of shift to another company because this company that I am currently in might call the other companies that you have applied to and try to do something to stop your application. It’s weird that they do that considering the fact that this company that I am affiliated with currently cannot offer job security coz it is a small BPO company on which clients come and go anytime..Is it alright to tell them that I would like to spend more time with my parents at the province?

Keep it short and sweet. Just say something like, “I’ve enjoyed the opportunities that you provided me here at XYZ company, but I have made the decision to move closer to my family.” I wouldn’t go into anything more than that.
